Summary of the 2007 music year

As always when the year comes to it's end it's time to summarize it with all kinds of lists and conclusions and what not. I know it's nearer to the end of February than the start of January, but I'll pretend to be a company who publishes their fiscal year review in the end of Feb instead ;).

A thing I didn't have last year is that I do now, is that I'm not living in a musical shadow, concert wise, anymore so I can also add concerts to this end year review! Never really understood how much I really missed going to concerts in Maastricht until I moved up here. Going to them without having to sleep in another home than your own that is. Not that the latter is anything less nice, it's just too complicated and/or too expensive.

When it comes to new music this year has kinda sucked though. I think that the return of britney speaks for itself (even if 2008 has seen the start of the end of her), at least when it comes to mainstream music. No offence to The View, they're quite alright and was pretty good live, but when a song about wearing the same jeans can be popular you know something is wrong. Mix it with a song about being under an Umbrella and  "That's that","Smack That" and "Crank That" being among the most selling songs of the year, then you know that things aren't like they used to be.

Back in the days the musicians could at least blame some psychedelic drug for writing strange lyrics. Nowadays it's just Cristal and cocaine. No "excuse" there what so ever.

Sure, Avril released a new album in 2007 but from a elitist kind of view it was never really any good. There were however a lot of catchy songs that were easy to listen to, and Avril's still Avril so my hdd spun a lot where The Best Damn Thing's one's and zero's were located.

Post-rock wise it was (as usual?) a really good year. Múm released their best album to date along with fellow Icelanders Sigur Rós who released a kinda new album on top of an awesome concert slash documentary film. French M83 released an ambient album which made you float around in thin air and the experienced guys of Explosions in the Sky also released their best album to date called All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone.

Biggest thing about 2007 was reunions though. "Smashing Pumpkins" (two out of four is not a reunion..), Rage Against The Machine, Pink Floyd,  The Police, Van Halen, Genesis.. Some should have stayed broken up, some never should have broken up. Seems stupid to break up over an album you started to record but then didn't want released. Of course I'm speaking about Rage. I just hope Zack de la Rocha's inability to get his solo record out don't passes on to the other guys from RATM who spat out three Audioslave records in the same amount of time Zack only managed to be a part of half a song on Saul Williams debut record. A new record released in time for the american presidential elections sounds  like a pretty good idea to me at least!

This post feels kinda uninspired a bit forced from my own part actually. Obviously I haven't posted here since November of last year so maybe it takes a while. November through January has historically on this blog been the quietest months as well, never totally silent like this time around though. At least I have no less than four posts waiting to be published after this one; 5 worst albums, 5 biggest surprises, 5 best concerts and the top 20 albums, all of 2007 of course, according to a very dear source to me, myself!
